Frequently asked questions
Short, practical answers to the questions patients often ask before contacting Dr Elchin Abbasov. Each answer links to a page with more detail.
How to use these answers
These answers explain how things generally work. They cannot tell you which treatment suits you, because that depends on an examination of your teeth, gums and bite. If your question is not covered here, you are welcome to send an enquiry.
About Dr Abbasov
What is Dr Abbasov's background?
Dr Elchin Abbasov is a DHA-licensed General Dentist in Dubai who first trained as a dental technician. He has more than 23 years of experience in dental technology and over 15 years in clinical dentistry; these periods overlap. His qualifications are listed on the education and experience page.
Why does a dental technician background matter?
Dental technicians design and make crowns, veneers and other restorations. Having worked in that field, Dr Abbasov plans treatment with the finished restoration in mind, including its thickness, its edges and how it will look in the mouth. The clinical and technical approach page explains this in more detail.
Consultations
What happens at a first consultation?
You explain what you would like to discuss, and Dr Abbasov examines your teeth, gums and bite, taking records such as photographs or a scan where they help. If treatment may be appropriate, the options and their limitations are explained. The patient information page describes each stage.
Do I have to decide on treatment at the consultation?
No. You are welcome to take time to think, ask further questions or seek another opinion. Nothing is decided without your informed consent.
How should I prepare?
It helps to note what you would like to change, list your medicines and bring any recent dental X-rays or records. The guide to preparing for your consultation includes useful questions to ask.
Veneers and crowns
What is the difference between a veneer and a crown?
A veneer is a thin layer of ceramic bonded to the front of a tooth, mainly to change its appearance. A crown covers the whole visible part of a tooth and is often considered when a tooth has lost more structure or needs more protection. Read more about porcelain veneers and dental crowns.
How is it decided whether a veneer or a crown is more suitable?
Assessment looks at how much healthy tooth remains, existing fillings, the bite, gum health and what you would like to change. Your dentist will discuss the options that may suit your teeth, including their limitations and any alternatives. Sometimes neither is needed.
Same-day treatment
Can I have veneers or crowns in one day?
Selected veneers, crowns and restorative cases may be completed in one visit where clinically appropriate, using design and milling in the clinic. This is decided after a clinical assessment, and more complex cases may need more than one appointment. See same-day dentistry for more.
What can make a case unsuitable for same-day treatment?
Factors include gum health, the bite, how many teeth are involved, the material needed and whether any other treatment must come first. Some cases simply benefit from more time between stages. Understanding same-day care explains these factors.
Digital workflow
What is an intraoral scan?
An intraoral scan uses a small handheld camera to build a 3D digital model of your teeth, often in place of traditional impression material. The model is then used for planning and design. Read more about intraoral scanning.
What does CAD/CAM mean?
CAD/CAM stands for computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing. A restoration is designed on screen and then made from a block of material, either in the clinic or by a laboratory. See CAD/CAM and in-clinic milling.
Implant-supported restorations
Does Dr Abbasov place dental implants?
Dr Abbasov's work with implants is on the restorative side: the crown, bridge or prosthesis that attaches to an implant. The implant itself may be placed by a suitable clinician as part of a coordinated plan. See implant-supported restorations.
I already have an implant. Can the crown on it be replaced?
Often an existing implant crown can be reviewed and, where appropriate, replaced. The implant and surrounding gum and bone need to be assessed first, and records from your previous treatment can help. Bring any details you have to your consultation.
Caring for restorations
How do I look after veneers and crowns?
Brush twice a day, clean between your teeth and keep regular check-ups and hygiene visits. If you grind your teeth, your dentist may discuss a protective night guard. More advice is in caring for restorations.
How long do restorations last?
There is no fixed lifespan. It depends on the material, the bite, habits such as grinding, and how well the teeth and gums are cared for. Regular reviews help spot any changes early.
Enquiries and privacy
Is sending an enquiry the same as booking?
No. An enquiry or consultation request is not a confirmed booking. The team will contact you to discuss your request and arrange a suitable time.
What happens to the information I send?
The form asks for your name, one contact method, your area of interest, a preferred contact time and an optional short question. It is used to respond to you and is not used for advertising. Please do not include detailed medical history; the privacy notice explains more.
